Colin O’Reilly, C&S UCC Demons Coach

A 33 point win against our local rivals is always a welcome sight. This was a real trap game for us as Neptune had nothing to lose so it was important we came out with the right intensity and energy from the first minute. Our sessions over Christmas were all based on execution and in the first three quarters we showed what a devastating team we can be by scoring 92 points and restricting Neptune to 45. Throughout these 30 minutes we played nine players over 12 minutes each and each player had a major impact on our performance. Their attention to detail and willingness to put their bodies on the line for the betterment of the team was something every coaching staff likes to see.
Offensively we have found a nice rhythm and balance throughout the team between forcing the ball inside (through post entries or dribble penetration) and knocking down the outside looks we are getting. This is forcing teams to react and try cover multiple options throughout each offence which is very tiring over a 40 minute period.
Defensively we were able to lock in on Neptune’s main treats and nullify a lot of their offensive weapons. We felt that their guards would turn the ball over under pressure and that’s the way the game played out. We were able to get numerous traps which led to uncontested lay ups and helped us set up our press again to build more momentum. This momentum helped bring the crowd into the game who were fantastic from start to finish. As a team we are very appreciative of the support we receive and do our best to put on a show.
