Demons U15’s win John Coughlan Tournament

Blue Demons U15 Boys started the 2016 basketball year in style with a great victory in the John Coughlan U15 tournament in the Parochial Hall on Saturday (2-Jan).

Demons had 2 pool games and beat St. Brendan’s from Tralee in their first game after coming out very strong in the 1st quarter (48-27).  Our lads beat Titans of Galway 51-22 in the second pool game to qualify as group winners.

Demons had  a real ding dong battle against Moycullen of Galway and lead 24-21 at half time in a very scrappy game. Our lads really came out all guns blazing in the 3rd quarter and stretched the lead to 10 points (39-29) after very good scores from Kevin Moynihan and Cian Looney. Demons again pushed the pressure in the 4th quarter with some good fast break basketball to run out convincing winners.

Next up for our lads in the semi finals were our local rivals Fr. Mathews who pushed us hard in the first quarter to keep the game tight but Demons lead 32-17 at half time. Demons continued to push on in the 3rd quarter(53-21) and won on a scoreline of 57-27 as defense was ramped up a notch in this game.

Demons coached by our master trio of David Lehane, Conor Deasy and Dermot Looney were ready for the final against a fancied Liffey Celtics. Our lads saved their best performance of the day until the final and came out all guns blazing with an exhibition of fast break basketball to lead 15-6 at the end of the first quarter. Our lads continued to push the pace in the second quarter with some great passing to lead 35-16 at half time as defense really played it’s part as well.

Our lads continued to share the ball and run the lanes in the second half with some great individual scores from Kevin, David, Sean, Jasper, Cian, Shane O’Sullivan as the whole team contributed in the second half with great impacts also from Ryan, Vernon, Eoin, Cian Thornton and Craig as our lads ran out winners on a scoreline of 66-43 with Demons President Mr John Coughlan presenting the trophy to our captain Sean Murphy.

Congratulations to the players and coaches on a great day of basketball to start 2016.

Thanks also to the big support who turned out at various stages throughout the day.
