Mr. Sean Murphy

    Sean Murphy was the initial entrant into the Blue Demons Hall of Fame in 1996, following an association with Blue Demons that spanned four decades. Sean joined Blue Demons in 1968 from Iona Basketball Club and during an illustrious playing career with Blue Demons won every honour that the game had to offer.

    A superb point guard, Sean was the inspiration behind many Blue Demons victories. Sean won over thirty International caps with the Irish Senior Men’s team and captained the squad on a number of occasions. He coached the Blue Demons National League team on three separate occasions and also coached the Irish Senior Men’s squad. Sean also acted as Manager to the Irish Men’s team.

    Sean was appointed Head Coaching in Blue Demons and has been very influential in developing the coaching structure within the club. Sean was very involved in the administration side of the game and served as Secretary of Blue Demons and also as Secretary to the Cork Men’s Basketball Board. Sean won the Cork Indoor Sports Award for Basketball, as well as Blue Demons Personality of the Year Award.

    Some of the notable highlights of Sean’s career are:

    1983 coached the Irish Senior Men’s team in the Olympic Pre-Qualifying Tournament
    1982-1983 coached Blue Demons to victory over Neptune in the ‘Basketball Classic’ in the R.D.S. and capture the National League Title
    1984 coached the Irish Senior Men’s team to a historic victory over Holy Cross in the U.S.

    1985 won the Irish Basketball Association ‘Presidents Award’.

    Sean coached many underage teams in Blue Demons over the years and continued to coach the nursery players for a long time. Sean Murphy and his experience were a key reason for our continued success at juvenile level.
