Our U17’s played their hearts out in the Billy Kelly Tournament over the last 2 days(25th & 26th March) after qualifying for the quarter finals after a marathon pool consisting of 5 games on Friday alone. Coached by our trio of Shane Coughlan, Conor Deasy and Brian Foley, our lads started their pool games with a very tight victory over Sligo All Stars to win 45-43. In game 2, our lads defeated St Brendan’s Tralee 49-22. In the 3rd and decisive pool game, our lads fought hard and were 4 points down at half time(25-21) but Moycullen extended their lead in the 3rd quarter and won on a scoreline of 48-37.
In the fourth pool game, our U17’s recovered from the previous defeat and came out all guns blazing against St Vincent’s Dublin to win 47-26.
In the final pool game, we played a talented Star from Belfast and lead 25-21 at half time. The game was really in the balance in the final moments with Demons 1 point up with just under 1 minute to go but we managed to push in the final minute to win by 7 points and qualify for the quarter finals.
In the quarter finals , we faced our neighbours Neptune in a tense affair in front of a huge crowd. We were 17-13 down at the end of the 1st quarter and scoring increased in the second quarter to trail 37-29 after some very good fast break basketball. Despite our lads starting well in the 3rd quarter and reduced the deficit to 5 points on a number of occasions, Neptune kept their composure to lead 53-43. In the final quarter, our lads tried hard to get back into the game but were losers on a scoreline of 66-51 after a very gallant and sporting effort.
Thanks to all who came out to support the team over the last couple of days. Our lads can be proud of their efforts.
Next up for the majority of this squad is the U16A league final on Tuesday night(30th March) in the Parochial Hall against Neptune. All support greatly appreciated.
