Former Blue Demons Juvenile, Superleague and Division 1 player Daniel O’Mahony makes his return to Cork and to the Blue Demons coaching staff with his appointment as Head Coach of the UCC Demons under 20 squad for the next 2 season. Daniel a former Under Age Irish international and prominent member of the all-conquering Juvenile team that included players like Niall Murphy, Carlton Cuffe, David Murphy, Anthony O Callaghan and Cathal O Flaherty. Daniel a lifelong member of Blue Demons and son of Blue Demons members Pat and Norma O Mahony had a hugely successful juvenile career finishing on a high winning the Under 20 National Cup with Demons. He progressed onto the Superleague Team winning a league and Cup in 2009 as a member of Doug Leichner’s unbeaten squad, and later continued his playing success at National Division 1 level. Daniel O Mahony was also cutting his teeth coaching under age and was a shining light in the next generation of young coaches. In 2013 he moved to Dublin to pursue personal and career opportunities and maintained a very visible role in Irish Basketball.
He continued his coaching development with the KUBS Basketball Club and had a very successful spell as Head Coach to their youthful Men’s League Division 1 team.
Daniel and his wife Jodie (Black) made career decisions to relocate to Cork this Summer, and naturally to get involved in Demons again.
Club Chairman Michael O’Leary stated:
The timing of Daniel return to Blue Demons could not be better in what has being a Summer of difficult decisions. The decision to focus and concentrate our energy on the Underage programmes is bolstered by Daniel’s return. Daniel brings a fresh approach, a stranger to the young players, someone new but a familiar face to the club someocoane with a proven Coaching ability with a genuine passion for Blue Demons. We look forward to this next chapter. Daniel will have a solid team to work with and we are hoping that his appointment will attract other players to commit to UCC Demons especially potential UCC Students coming into Cork next term that see this appointment as massive statement of intent from UCC Demons for the immediate future.
Daniel O’Mahony stated:
After 6 years away from Blue Demons I turned from member / coach to super fan a Saturday night in Dublin wouldn’t pass without me supporting Demons against the likes of Killester , UCD , Thunder and Eanna.
I owe a massive thanks to Kubs Basketball Club for taking me in with open arms and over the 3 seasons I spent with them giving me opportunity to coach 18s, 20s, D1 and National League.
This really gave me a chance to work with some fantastic players and better myself as a coach while always learning.
Now that myself and my wife have relocated back HOME I was so happy to be giving the opportunity to get back involved with Blue Demons and especially the Under 20 side who are currently the pinnacle of the Club.
Some fantastic underage players currently among Demons Juvenile system I can’t wait to get started working with his group.
After all the success, memories and friends Demons has giving me, now I feel is the perfect time to give back and hopefully bring some success. I am really excited about getting started.
